I’m sure you’ve all heard about the three Filipino citizens who were caught transporting heroin and trafficking drugs who just got executed this week. This would be the first time Filipinos would be executed in China for drug trafficking.
Through the efforts of Binay appealing for the lives of those three Filipinos, pushing for life imprisonment rather than death penalty, those three Filipino citizens were still found guilty of the crime. However, even China’s chief justice and president doesn’t have the power to overturn the death penalty set to them. Even them cannot stop executions like we can’t, like how other foreign governments can’t stop executions who violated the Chinese Law. Yes, I know it’s a bit insane and harsh thinking about death penalty and lethal injection and I’m sure it would drive anyone insane but rules are rules. The law is harsh but it’s the law.
Death penalty is threatening. But if you’re confidently not doing something wrong, then why should you be threatened in the first place?
I won’t really say that those Filipinos deserve what happened to them but I would say that it had to happen to them. Those three Filipinos knew that drug trafficking is illegal but still, they did it or not did it. But they were found guilty and that’s the only thing that matters when it comes to the law. Maybe they were only doing that because their thinking was they were victims of money and poverty so it’s okay to sell drugs, but still, they were in China and they violated the Chinese law. Most people who are living the poverty line still get to have dignified jobs like selling on the streets or doing a little business. So my opinion is, they were not victims of poverty but rather, they were victims of their own ignorance, flawed thinking and misplaced values.
Honestly speaking, I have no problems regarding death penalty. If our government is a lot more strict, then people would be more scared with violating the law leading to less crimes. I also think this is why the justice system in this country is screwed, because Filipinos think na kaya nalang nila lahat idaan sa magandang usapan. Well, guys, face the truth, we can’t do that all the time. Those three Filipino citizens chose to face it the hard way. Basically, the Chinese just taught the Filipinos how they take their laws seriously.
What we Filipinos don’t realize is that our ignorance and misplaced values gives us trouble not only here in the Philippines but also overseas. The difference is, all countries have different laws, and because of the screwed up justice system here in our country, we can get away with drug trafficking and murder here easier rather than if we do that in other countries. If we don’t want other foreign governments enforcing us penalties for violating their own laws, it’s either you stay on the Philippines or comply with their law. It’s actually simple as that.
I promise I’m not heartless and I would still pray for their souls and hope for their family comfort, but I really do hope you get what I’m saying.
